WHY WE LOVE IT

WHY PARK TENNIS CHOSE IT

Most tennis media starts with the score. Racquet starts with everything the score leaves out: art, clothes, travel, architecture, obsession, and the strange people who make the sport worth following. That shift changed what tennis publishing could look and sound like. Racquet can feel more cocktail party than public park, and that distance is worth naming. But the magazine helped prove that tennis culture was large enough to deserve serious writing and beautiful print. Park Tennis exists in part because that door was opened. We chose Racquet because a useful guide should recognize the institutions that expanded the imagination of the sport, even when we want to push the conversation somewhere more accessible.

THE BRAND STORY

A print magazine gave the new tennis boom its cultural voice.

A print magazine gave the new tennis boom its cultural voice.

WHO IT’S FOR

Readers who care as much about tennis's art, style, travel, and characters as its scores.

Journalists Caitlin Thompson and David Shaftel founded Racquet in New York in 2016 as a print-first answer to conventional tennis coverage. The first issue promised to celebrate the art, ideas, style, and culture around the game, while recovering some of the swagger tennis carried during the boom years of the 1970s and '80s.

Racquet has since grown beyond the magazine into digital publishing, events, collaborations, commerce, and travel. The formats have expanded, but the central argument remains intact: tennis becomes more interesting when the people, places, images, and ideas around the court are treated as part of the sport rather than decoration.
